Minnesota Employment Projections
Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, FutureWork
Total employment in Minnesota is projected to expand by 291,000 jobs during the 10-year period from 2006 to 2016, reaching 3.25 million jobs by 2016, according to recently released Minnesota employment projections. Total job openings during the 10-year 2006 to 2016 projection period are estimated to be 940,640. Total openings are the sum of new jobs created when new firms start up and existing firms expand plus openings created when workers retire or otherwise permanently leave the occupation.
The projected employment increase is less than the 370,000 jobs projected during the previous 10-year employment projection period (2004-2014). The rate of job growth is expected be slower during the next 10 years compared to the previous 10-year projection. Job growth was projected to be 12.8 percent between 2004 and 2014, but the new projections expect job growth to be lower, 9.8 percent between 2006 and 2016.
Industry and occupational employment projections at various levels of detail can be retrieved by using the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development’s (DEED) Labor Market Information Employment Outlook Tool. http://www.deed.state.mn.us/lmi/tools/projections National projections for 2006-2016 are also available on the website, while Minnesota sub state region data for 2006-2016 will be updated in the future.
These 10-year forecasts are updated every other year. Projections are developed based on a national trend analysis model. Minnesota’s industry mix and occupational mix are accounted for in the development of projections using Minnesota’s Census of Employment and Wage (CEW) employment data and Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) staffing pattern data.
The Employment Outlook Tool also has a feature to select long-term high growth/high wage and high demand/high wage occupations. Eleven of the top 15 long-term High Growth/High Pay Occupation Projections are healthcare or computer-related occupations.
