Financial
Finances can be a significant concern for those with disabilities. You may qualify for monetary compensation from long or short term disability insurance (if employed when disabling conditions occur), veteran’s benefits, or other government based benefits. Learn about compensation, coverage and housing resources.
Compensation and coverage
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) pays benefits according to the
amount of Social Security taxes you have already paid.
- Supplemental
Security Income (SSI) pays benefits based on financial need.
- Medical expenses have a tremendous impact on finances especially for people with disabilities. The Minnesota Department of Human Services ensures basic health care coverage for low-income Minnesotans through four major publicly subsidized health care assistance programs.
- Many counties, townships, and cities offer general assistance, medical assistance and housing resources for their residents.
- Most counties and Indian reservations have energy assistance programs available to Minnesota citizens. Additional services can range from outreach, financial resources, home ownership services, and financial counseling.
Housing
Finding affordable housing is often difficult for persons with disabilities. Many disabilities require barrier-free dwellings such as accommodations that are wheelchair accessible.
- Accessible Space, Inc. is a national organization which provides accessible, affordable housing, supportive living opportunities and
rehabilitation services for adults with physical disabilities and brain
injuries, as well as seniors. Cooperative homes and town homes are available in the metropolitan areas of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota.
- Housing
Resources Toolbox
provides housing and service options, affordable housing
programs, searchable databases for locating housing, and information to help
you stay in your own home.
