Career Planning Process

Assess yourself

Explore your career options

Set career goals

Step one

Assessments are tools that help you discover important things about yourself.

Career assessments identify possible careers based on different things - like your interests, skills, and work style.

Assessments come in different formats and some are more reliable than others. Take as many as you can and compare the results you are given. Approach your assessment results as new options to explore as you plan your career.

Consider a career path

Whether or not you choose to take assessments, think about a career path you wish to take. Consider past experiences that you feel were particularly rewarding such as:

  • jobs
  • volunteer activities
  • parenting
  • going to school
  • working on a hobby.

Make a list of these experiences and identify reasons why they were so satisfying. Include other experiences that could provide the same sort of satisfaction.

Utilize your self-assessment results to explore your career options.
