What Do You Like?

Would you like an IT career?

It's one thing to be interested in IT. How can you know if you'd like a job in IT? Is IT a good fit for you?

There are a wide variety of jobs within IT. Beyond using specialized technical knowledge in IT, successful workers also need to:

  • Work on teams. Understanding and enjoying teamwork is the foundation of all IT careers. You'll need to be a team player who can both see the big picture (and how you fit in) as well as be able to chase down the smallest technical detail. These skills will help you be indispensable to your employer.
  • Communicate with others. While some IT careers require a lot of face-to-face conversations, all IT jobs will require you to communicate by e-mail, phone, and by writing documents, formal or informal. You must be able to keep others informed of your work.
  • Solve problems. You'll use a variety of basic skills such as reading, writing, and math to understand and meet the specific business requirements by using your technical skills.

The Work Cycle of an IT Professional

Analyzing problems, proposing solutions, and then working on teams to implement the solutions is the basic work cycle of an IT professional.
