Like most industries, there are a wide variety of jobs within energy. But there a core set of skills and abilities that are common to most energy careers.
Do you enjoy working on a team? All energy occupations require teamwork and working with others. Communication is especially important. You might need to give directions, deal with difficult customers, write reports, or keep a record of activities.
Do you like to troubleshoot and solve problems? When problems arise, energy workers need to use technical, mathematical, or scientific solutions to fix them. A basic level of knowledge (arithmetic, fractions, and basic algebra) is required.
Is safety a priority for you? Energy can be dangerous work. Workers must respect safety rules and be accurate using tools and monitoring equipment.
Are you comfortable using computers? Energy workers need to be able to use a computer. It is especially helpful to know the basic office programs. They also have to learn energy-specific technology and software.
How is your physical strength and stamina? Many energy workers need to rely on these physical abilities to work outdoors, move equipment, or work long shifts.
