The electric power transmission and distribution career paths tool was created in December 2010 with two funding sources: a Green Labor Market Information Improvement grant awarded to the Labor Market Information Office of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and funding from an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant awarded to the Division of Energy Resources of the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

Electricity from power plants is transmitted to substations where voltage is "stepped down" and distributed to homes.
Retiring workers, aging infrastructure, wind farm development, and increasing electricity demand could all lead to more transmission and distribution jobs.
There are almost 160,000 miles of high voltage power lines in the United States.
New "smart grid" technologies could make the transmission grid more energy efficient, reliable, and cost effective.
