The commercial energy efficiency career paths tool was created in August 2010 with two funding sources: a Green Labor Market Information Improvement grant awarded to the Labor Market Information Office of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development and funding from an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant awarded to the Division of Energy Resources of the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

Energy prices, environmental awareness, federal funding, and utility programs create demand for energy-efficient services.
Greenhouse gasses from buildings account for almost half of all emissions in the United States.
Buildings can become more efficient by updating lighting, maintaining mechanical systems, and installing sensors that influence operations.
Many energy upgrades to commercial buildings quickly pay for themselves in the money they save.
