Need help paying for college? There are nearly as many types of scholarships as there are types of people.

Scholarships are awarded for academic achievement, athletic achievement, special skills, or race, ethnicity, religion or military affiliation. Most scholarships are offered directly to students through the colleges.

Follow these general tips for scholarship search

  • Be wary of fee-based search services.
  • Start your search early; many scholarships have early deadlines.
  • Create a check list of questions as you search for scholarships.
  • Many colleges, high schools, and libraries have scholarship search tools that you can use free of charge.

  3. Ethnic and gender-based scholarships

    American Indian College Fund
    Provides useful information on tribal colleges and scholarship opportunities for Native American students.

    Financial Aid for Native American Students
    Provides financial aid information for Native American students.

    Hispanic College Fund
    Provides useful information on scholarship opportunities for Hispanic students.

    NCAA Scholarships and Internships
    The NCAA offers a variety of scholarship and internship programs for ethnic minorities including the Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship Program and the Division III Ethnic Minority and Women's Internship Grant Program.

    The United Negro College Fund
    Awards scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students attending a UNCF member college or university, including other historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and majority institutions. UNCF also supports faculty members through grants for research and dissertation completion.

    American Association of University Women
    One of the world's largest sources of funding exclusively for graduate women, the Foundation supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented.

    Society of Women Engineers
    National SWE scholarships available for freshmen, sophomore, juniors and seniors, graduate students and reentry students.

    Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund
    Scholarship awards are based primarily on financial need and previous achievements for women who earned their high school diploma or GED at least 10 years ago. Women seeking an undergraduate degree from an accredited two- or four-year college or university may apply.

    Locate scholarships and other education benefits specifically for military members, veterans and their families.

    Minnesota Educational Assistance for War Orphans
    Qualified war orphans may receive financial assistance each year from the Department of Veterans Affairs to be used for tuition, books, supplies, board and room.

    Minnesota Educational Assistance for War Veterans
    Provides educational assistance for Minnesota war veterans who attend an approved educational institution in Minnesota. Veterans may qualify for a one-time stipend.

    Minnesota National Guard Benefits
    Members of the Minnesota National Guard may be eligible to receive specific veterans benefits, and may be eligible for federal and state grants from the federal government and the state of Minnesota.

    Military Service Education Benefits
    Provides information compiled by the Minnesota Office of Higher Education on some of the key federal and state education benefits available to Minnesota veterans or those currently servicing in the military.

    Offers information on Montgomery GI Bill for Active Duty and Selected Reserve, Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP), Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA) and more.

    Troops to Teachers
    U.S. Department of Education and Department of Defense program assists eligible military personnel transition to a new career as public school teachers in schools serving students from low-income families. Financial as well as referral and placement assistance is provided.
