Need help paying for college? There are nearly as many types of scholarships as there are types of people.

Scholarships are awarded for academic achievement, athletic achievement, special skills, or race, ethnicity, religion or military affiliation. Most scholarships are offered directly to students through the colleges.

Follow these general tips for scholarship search

  • Be wary of fee-based search services.
  • Start your search early; many scholarships have early deadlines.
  • Create a check list of questions as you search for scholarships.
  • Many colleges, high schools, and libraries have scholarship search tools that you can use free of charge.

  • American Indian College Fund
    Provides useful information on tribal colleges and scholarship opportunities for Native American students.

  • Hispanic College Fund
    Provides useful information on scholarship opportunities for Hispanic students.
  • NCAA Scholarships and Internships
    The NCAA offers a variety of scholarship and internship programs for ethnic minorities including the Ethnic Minority and Women's Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship Program and the Division III Ethnic Minority and Women's Internship Grant Program.

  • The United Negro College Fund

Minnesota Resources

  • Minnesota Educational Assistance for War Orphans
    Qualified war orphans may receive financial assistance each year from the Department of Veterans Affairs to be used for tuition, books, supplies, room, and board.
  • Minnesota Educational Assistance for War Veterans
    Provides an educational benefit in the form of a one-time grant to Minnesota veterans who have exhausted their federal benefits.
  • Minnesota National Guard Benefits
    Members of the Minnesota National Guard may be eligible to receive specific veterans benefits, and may be eligible for federal and state grants from the federal government and the state of Minnesota.
  • Military Service Education Benefits
    Provides information compiled by the Minnesota Office of Higher Education on some of the key federal and state education benefits available to Minnesota veterans or those currently servicing in the military.

  • Troops to Teachers
    The U.S. Department of Education and Department of Defense program assists eligible military personnel transitioning to a new career as public school teachers in schools serving students from low-income families. Financial as well as referral and placement assistance is provided.
