Extracurricular Activities and Online Learning

The state has certain guidelines for OLL program students participating in extracurricular activities.

  1. What are considered extracurricular activities?

The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) defines extracurricular activities as any MSHSL-sponsored Athletic and Fine Arts program for students in grades 7 through 12. These events may include such activities as:

    • Athletics
    • Band
    • Small and large group competition
    • Choir
    • Speech
    • Debate
    • One-act plays
    • Visual arts festival

  2. What are the eligibility rules?

The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is the governing agency that develops the policies and procedures regarding extracurricular activities. In August 2004, the MSHSL Board of Directors determined that "the public school district in which the virtual school student is located will be the student?s resident district for the purposes of athletic and fine arts eligibility."

The MSHSL will use current charter school eligibility rules. Students are eligible at the charter school, if it offers extracurricular activities. Otherwise, the charter must co-op with a MSHSL member school that agrees to host the cooperative program.

Specific questions about eligibility should be directed to the Minnesota State High School League.
