Industry: Hospitals

Industry Sectors

Employers with similar products or services are grouped into industry sectors. Industries are grouped using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Classifying employers by type helps economists collect, publish, and interpret industry data.

The NAICS describes industry activity in hospitals as follows:

Hospitals (NAICS 622)

Provide general medical and surgical, psychiatric and substance abuse, and specialty care.

General Medical and Surgical Hospitals (NAICS 6221)

Provide diagnostic and medical treatment to inpatients with various medical conditions.

Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Hospitals (NAICS 6222)

Provide diagnosis, medical treatment, and monitoring services for inpatients with mental illness or substance abuse disorders.

Specialty Hospitals not for Psychiatric and Substance Abuse (NAICS 6223)

Provide services to inpatients with a specific type of disease or condition.

Nursing and Residential Care Facilities (NAICS 623)

Provide nursing care, residential care for mental retardation, mental health, and substance abuse services.
