Industry: Transportation Support And Warehousing

Industry Sectors

Employers with similar products or services are grouped into industry sectors. Industries are grouped using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Classifying employers by type helps economists collect, publish, and interpret industry data.

The NAICS describes industry activity in transportation support and warehousing as follows:

Support Activities for Transportation (NAICS 488)

Air traffic control, marine cargo handling, motor vehicle towing, railroad switching, terminals, ship repair and maintenance (not in a shipyard) such as floating drydock services in harbors; airport operation, servicing, repairing; maintaining and storing aircraft.

Postal Service (NAICS 491)

Delivering letters and small parcels that can be handled by one person without using special equipment. Collection, pick-up, and delivery operations. Sorting, routing, and delivery.

Warehousing and Storage (NAICS 493)

Warehousing and storage facilities for general merchandise, refrigerated goods, and other warehouse products.
