Hiring Practices
Many employers prefer to hire technicians who have at least two years of training or an associate degree. Some employers prefer technicians with a bachelor's degree. Some prefer those with internship or other lab experience. In addition, employers look for technicians who are good with computers. They also look for technicians who can write and speak well. Being able to work well with others is also important, since technicians often work in teams.
Advancement Opportunities
Science technicians usually begin work as trainees in routine jobs. They are supervised by a scientist or an experienced technician. As they gain experience, technicians take on more difficult tasks. In time, they carry out their duties under only general supervision. Some become supervisors of other technicians.
Technicians at universities often are tied to one professor. When professors leave or retire, these technicians may face uncertain job prospects.
