Hiring Practices
Employers look for people who have the qualities needed to maintain a restaurant's image. These qualities include good communication skills and a neat, clean appearance. Waiters and waitresses must also be physically able to work long hours and stand for long periods of time. Employers look for people who can get along well with other staff.
Some employers prefer to hire people who are at least 16 or have a high school diploma or GED. Waiters and waitresses who serve alcohol must be at least 21 years old.
Advancement Opportunities
In most restaurants, advancement opportunities for waiters and waitresses are limited. As they gain more experience, waiters and waitresses may be promoted to headwaiter or restaurant manager positions. In large restaurant chains, they may be invited to enter a management training program.
Advancement for waiters and waitresses is often in the form of higher wages. They often move to more formal restaurants where they can earn larger tips.
