Hiring Practices

Most employers prefer to hire applicants who have a high school diploma or GED.

General knowledge of motor vehicles and the tools necessary for repairs is helpful. Employers look for applicants who have experience and stamina.

Advancement Opportunities

Opportunities for advancement are limited at small shops. At large shops, however, tire repairers and changers who have good people skills may become supervisors. Those who have sales ability may become tire salespeople. Those who receive additional training may become mechanics.
