Hiring Practices
Employers usually require strong computer skills. They require applicants to be skilled in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Employers often prefer applicants who have experience with newer technology, such as scanners and Internet search engines. Employers prefer to hire executive secretaries who have good judgment and the ability to organize. Good writing and people skills are required for secretaries at any level.
Advancement Opportunities
Secretaries advance by being promoted to positions with more responsibility. For example, they may advance to working for higher-level executives. Others may advance to office manager positions. Learning as much as they can about their company's operation may help executive secretaries advance. Certification may also improve the chances for advancement.
Secretarial experience can also lead to jobs as an instructor or sales representative with companies that make software or computer equipment.
