Barbers and Barbershops: Various Classes
The license information below is specific to the state of Minnesota.
Description
License Requirements:
Student:
-1,500 hours of training in an approved board school.
-Successfully pass the apprentice examination.
-Students who fail the exam are required to complete an additional 500 hours of schooling.
Registered Barber:
-May own shop.
-Must renew license annually. If license is not renewed within one year of lapsing, must retest.
-Must have current license if barbering.
Apprentice:
-Must work under the immediate supervision of a registered barber for 12 months and 1,500 hours.
-Must purchase home study course.
-Must have a current license while working.
-License must be renewed annually.
-Apprentice has 4 years to complete the above requirements. If requirements are not fulfilled within the 4 years applicant would have to retake apprentice examination to barber in Minnesota.
-Successfully pass the registered barber examination. Apprentices who fail the examination must complete an additional 300 hours of apprenticeship before they are eligible to retake the examination.
Temporary Apprentice Permit:
-A registered barber from another state can apply for this permit to allow them to work until the examination is given. To qualify for this permit, the applicant must submit to the board a license certification from the state they are licensed in. The certification must be signed and sealed by the state's board. Applicant must also submit a copy of their current outstate license. This permit is good for 6 months.
Instructor License:
-To qualify for this license, applicant must have been licensed as a Minnesota registered barber for three years and complete a course in Human Relations and 192 clock hours of courses approved by the board.
-Must take and pass instructor examination.
-Temporary permit can be issued providing applicant shows proof of being continuously enrolled in classes required.
Shop Registration:
-If barber is working, they must have a shop registration if not working for someone else.
-This application requires that a detailed floor plan be submitted with the application.
School Registration:
-This is required to operate a barber school in Minnesota.
-There are numerous requirements for this license which can be found in the statutes and rules.

Period:
Student Permit - 15 months. Apprentice, Registered Barber, Shop Registration, Instructor, and School Licenses are issued for a period of one year. Temporary Apprentice Permit - 6 months. Apprentice, Registered Barber, Instructor, and School Licenses must be renewed annually by December 31st. Shop Registrations must be renewed anually by June 30th.
Determination:
Student permits issued in one day. Examinations are given four times a year - February, May, August and November. Results of the examination are available the next working day. Results of examinations are sent to the applicants along with appropriate material within two days of the examination. Renewals - one to three days. Requests for applications, certifications and general information is usually sent in one day.
