Social Worker License (Various Classes)
The license information below is specific to the state of Minnesota.
Description
License Requirements:
Licensed Social Worker (LSW):
-Baccalaureate degree from accredited program of social work.
-Examination.
-Specified practice under supervision. Post-licensure
Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW):
-Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited program of social work.
-Examination.
-Specified practice under supervision. Post-licensure
Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW):
-Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited program of social work.
-Examination.
-Specified practice under supervision.
Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW):
-Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited school of social work.
-Clinically oriented practice.
-Specified practice under supervision.
-Examination.
Social Work Professional Firm
-First Report form along with a copy of the firm's articles of incorporation.
-Filing thereafter, file a Social Work Professional Firm - Annual Report form on or before January 1st of each year.

Fee for Change in Licensure:
A licensee who applies for and is approved for a different license must pay the difference between the license fees for the two licenses, prorated from the date the Board approves the new license to the expiration date of the initial or the renewed license (to keep the license on the established renewal cycle), and return the license certificate and license card for the first license.

Licensing of city, county and state agency social workers is voluntary.
Federally recognized tribes and ethnic minorities working in private nonprofit agencies with an ethnic minority focus also have voluntary social work licensure.
Foreign-born applicants for whom English is a second language are eligible for licensure after having failed the examination.
